Photo News
In January of 2025, my son and I traveled to Yellowstone National Park to experience the park and its wildlife during the winter season. In January, the wildlife out number the visitors, and it is a completely different experience to be immersed within this vast park during the relative solitude of the winter months. We took a concessioner excursion into the heart of the park and did some exploring on our own through the Northern section of the park including the famous Lamar Valley. I am including two new wildlife images captured during this trip that will be available during this years art fairs:
I have just signed up for the 2025 Syttende Mai Art Festival in Stoughton which will be held on Saturday May 17th in the Stoughton High School. Last year's show was one of my favorites, so I am really looking forward to this year's festival!
I have also just been accepted as a vendor for the Oregon Art Walk in Oregon WI scheduled for Saturday June 14, 2025. I am eager to meet the attendees at the Art Walk in June.
After Oregon, I plan on attending Lodi Art in the Park in early July, This will be my fourth fair in Lodi and these have consistently gone well at the past fairs.
Featured Image: Sequoia Boles and Dogwood
One evening along the Generals Highway in Sequoia National Park in 2001, I spotted light dappling a Giant Sequoia bole, which along with a parallel tree framed a series of dogwood trees in full blossom climbing the hill behind the two trees. This image is available in multiple sizes up to 20x28 and is printed on natural textured archival cotton rag paper.
Best Selling North American Bison Images
The three Bison images below; Bull Bison Profile, Yellowstone Winter Bison, and Sleeping Bull Bison are available in multiple sizes and formats. The images below are pictures of the actual prints in 8.5x11 inch format printed with Epson archival inks on Moab Coldpress Natural textured heavy weight paper (300 gsm). The natural tone of the paper lends an antique look to the prints and also, due to the lack of optical brightening agents within the paper, gives the images an extended lifespan (>100 yrs) under normal viewing conditions. The Sleeping Bull Bison and Yellowstone Winter Bison are also available as fine art photogravure images in a limited edition (See section below). The Bull Bison Profile is available in sizes up to 20x30 inches. Please see my companion website at www.bisonphotos.com for more images and information on photographing bison.
Photogravure Limited Edition: Sleeping Bull Bison
I'm pleased to offer a limited edition fine art print of a sleeping bison made by using a traditional photogravure/etching press technique with a modern twist. Artists from the past, such as Edward Curtis, produced photogravures by transfering a glass plate negative/ image to a copper plate using acid to etch the fine detail and nuances of the original image onto the plate. The etched copper plate was then inked, and a handmade paper of vellum/Japanese tissue, etc was pressed into the fine grooves of the plate resulting in a unique and highly detailed image. Most of Curtis' famous North American Indian project photogravure images are printed in a warmer sepia tone. Elk Boy - Ogalala is an example of Curtis' smaller photogravure images printed in a warm tone (below).
The Sleeping Bull Bison etching print below measures 8x12 inches and is printed on 15x22 inch Hahnemuhle Copperplate Natural paper with a deckled edge. He was photographed in South Dakota using a Leica R6.2 camera, Leitz 280 mm APO lens on Kodak Tri-X film. This gravure edition will be limited to 3 prints, priced at $220 per print. This printing method rivals platinum printing as one of the finest photo reproduction techniques available today. Sierra Nevada Red Fox
The Sierra Nevada Red Fox, pictured below in Northern California, is the rarest fox in the world, and half of the proceeds from the sale of this image will be forwarded to staff at Lassen Volcanic NP for research and recovery of this endangered species. This small, reclusive fox resides year round in the high elevations of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade Mountain Ranges and is distinguishable by a long white-tipped bushy tail and black fur-backed ears. Current research indicates that fewer than 50 individual foxes still exist in the wild and this beautiful photograph is my best selling image.. Prices start at $25 for an 8x10/8.5x11, and $50 for an 11x14 print of this image. Matted prints to 11x14 (8x10) and 16x20 (11x14) are also available for sale.
